Special Counsel John Durham made a minor filing last week in the criminal case against former Perkins Coie partner Michael Sussman who’s charged with lying to the FBI. The motion’s supporting documents contained some astounding information.
As we’ve known for years, during 2016, the Clinton campaign funded efforts to locate (or concoct) information connecting Donald Trump to certain Russian banking activity. And it successfully recruited FBI higher-ups to assist in that endeavor. Sussman was allegedly part of that effort. But the Durham filing shows that the project continued well after the election was over. As late as September, 2017, Clinton campaign operatives were still paying Sussman to try to undermine Trump, then a sitting president.
For years I’ve gazed in slack-jawed wonderment that the leading corporate media considered the real scandal of the Trump years to be something that didn’t exist, i.e., some form of “collusion” between Trump and Russia. But when Robert Mueller destroyed that narrative, the same news media essentially ignored, and continues to ignore, the actual scandal: that the Clinton campaign paid Perkins Coie, who paid Fusion GPS who paid Christopher Steele to confect a story of Trump wrongdoing. That story was then fed to the FBI who channeled it to the FISA court to obtain surveillance warrants against Trump supporter Carter Page. According to most of the MSM, there was nothing to see there.
But the more we hear from John Durham, the more we come to understand just how much there actually is to see. The dirty tricks of the Clinton campaign now look worse than the crimes of Richard Nixon’s Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP). After all, it’s one thing to try to dig up real dirt on an opponent during a campaign, but to (a) fabricate dirt where none exists and (b) continue to use it after the election is over for the purpose of removing from office a sitting president is something else entirely. Add to that the involvement of our chief law-enforcement agency and the whole thing carries the distinct and acrid odor of an attempted coup d'état.
Would the press be so blasé if the same had been done by Trump to Clinton? To ask the question is to answer it.
I’ve often inveighed against the four-year campaign to destroy the Trump presidency. It’s a truly unprecedented attack, not just on that president, but on American democracy. And the more we know, the worse it gets. Meanwhile, most of the corporate media, its level of trustworthiness already at an all-time low, sit by, neither seeing nor hearing evil.
And, since in comedy (even black comedy) timing is everything, I may as well add that, as President Biden’s approval ratings tank, and the Clinton campaign looks ever sleazier, the same Hillary Clinton seems to be considering another bid for the Democratic nomination in 2024.
